Woven and Embroidered Patches

Embroidered Patches vs Woven Patches

Both woven and embroidered patches are excellent ways to decorate, enhance, highlight, and embellish the look of your apparel and products. They both use threads to articulate and express your design concepts. While an embroidered patch is basically a piece of embroidery made from a fabric backing and thread, a woven patch is created by weaving the threads together to create a patch. Due to the difference in how they are made, you may want to use one over the other.

What is the main difference between an embroidered and woven patch?

embroidered and woven patches Woven labels are all threads woven together on a loom. Embroidered patches are threads embroidered onto a substrate, most typically cotton canvas with an embroidery machine. Then, how do they differ and which one is best for my brand? Well, if your artwork has fine details such as intricate artwork, small texts, or gradation, we definitely recommend a woven patch over embroidered patch. Embroidery does not allow for the same amount of detail as woven apparel labels do, since the thread is much thicker and it's embroidered onto a stiff substrate. If you need a patch that looks similar to a military/scout patch or need some depth, we recommend an embroidered patch. Crude stitches are visible that create a rugged, bulky appearance. It's great for embellishing sport jackets, pants, and uniforms. closeup_clothing_patches

Colors

The canvas backgrounds come in multitudes of colors; however, PantoneTM colors cannot be matched exactly. They will be matched as close as possible.  Embroidery threads are matched to PantoneTM colors and can be matched very closely, although not exact.

If you don’t like the look of embroidered patches, or want a more detailed patch, woven patches are a great option. Woven patches are produced just like woven labels, but are usually die cut to shape and have a felt backing. Woven Patches can be sewn on or ironed on. You can also have over-lock stitching on woven patches.  Woven patches are generally less expensive than embroidered patches, and are faster to produce. But if you are looking for that embroidered look, woven patches might not work for your needs.

Woven patches can also be made into key chains, dog tags, promotional items, and zipper pulls by inserting materials inside to give dimension and 3D effect.  Woven patches can enhance the look of your clothing, toys, shoes, accessories and much more!
